YOKOSUKA, Japan – For more than half a century, the city of Yokosuka and the United States Navy have held a special relationship. And today, the Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) holds an even more unique relationship with the city.
Corpus Christi, Texas, the namesake of the submarine, is a sister city to Yokosuka. The two cities have held 54 years of sister city relations and have much in common. Both are port cities and thrive on the port harbor industries and both are home to U.S. military installations.
During the City of Corpus Christi’s port visit in Yokosuka, Cmdr. Travis Petzoldt, commanding officer, along with a delegation from the submarine and Fleet Activities Yokosuka, and Mayor Yuto Yoshida, city of Yokosuka and the city’s representatives held a plaque exchange to commemorate the special relationship that the two cities have held.
“It is an honor to be here,” Petzoldt told Yoshida. “The hospitality of you and your people here, as well as the alliance and friendship we have is great.”
City of Corpus Christi arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) Jan. 11 for a port visit. The boat’s Sailors have been enjoying the rich culture of Japan and all that Yokosuka has to offer.
“I’m glad your crew is able to enjoy a good time here in Yokosuka,” said Yoshida. “It’s all because of our relationship. We have a great relationship with CFAY.”
Petzoldt also presented Yoshida with a command ball cap.
“The next time that I visit Corpus Christi, I will wear it,” said Yoshida.
The timing of the exchange couldn’t have been more fitting. The memorable visit to Yokosuka will be City of Corpus Christi’s final foreign port visit before she returns to her homeport of Pearl Harbor and is later to be decommissioned.
Commissioned in 1983, City of Corpus Christi has a long standing tradition of excellence and achievement. Its crew is highly trained and capable of supporting the boat through any mission cycle within short notice.
