DIEGO GARCIA, British Indian Ocean Territory (Jan. 6, 2016) – The submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) arrived in Diego Garcia for a port visit Jan. 6.
The submarine tender is scheduled to be the lead maintenance activity for submarines visiting the island.
“I’m looking forward to a productive stay in our former homeport,” said Capt. Mark A. Prokopius, commanding officer of Emory S. Land. “We have a lot of maintenance jobs lined up for us and the crew is ready to offer top-notch support to our tended units.”
Emory S. Land recently completed a change of homeport from Diego Garcia to Guam, but for many of the crew, this will be their first time visiting the island.
Land Sailors will have the opportunity to experience Diego Garcia’s natural beauty and surrounding land and seascapes through Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) coordinated events.
Emory S. Land is a forward deployed expeditionary submarine tender on an extended deployment conducting coordinated tended moorings and afloat maintenance in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations.
