NBG Charles King Fitness Center Set to Begin 24/7 Fitness Aug. 4

25 July 2024

From Valerie Maigue , U.S. Naval Base Guam

NAVAL BASE GUAM (July 26, 2024) – U.S. Naval Base Guam’s (NBG) Charles King Fitness Center (CKFC) will commence 24/7 fitness operations beginning Aug. 4.
NAVAL BASE GUAM (July 26, 2024) – U.S. Naval Base Guam’s (NBG) Charles King Fitness Center (CKFC) will commence 24/7 fitness operations beginning Aug. 4.

Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), which oversees all 70 Navy bases around the globe, signed a memorandum authorizing installation commanding officers to move forward with implementing 24-hour entry to CNIC fitness facilities. With the mandate, fitness facilities must be in compliance for 24-hour access by the end of September 2024.

“This is a long time coming and we are very excited to finally open up Charles King Fitness Center for 24/7 access,” said Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Guam (MWR) Director Donna Spaddy.
CKFC staff will support 24/7 operations, however, after-hours staffing will be phased out once all planned electronic access and security compliance measures are in place.

For several months, efforts have been focused on the installation of electronic access and surveillance systems for safety and security. These measures will allow authorized access to the facility while ensuring the fitness center remains safe and secure after hours. The long term plan is to phase out after hours manning and updates will be provided by Naval Base Guam prior to this going into effect.

More than 830 patrons use CKFC daily. Military personnel stand duty at varying hours of the day, including night shifts, depending on their roles and responsibilities. As a result, service members often have difficulty getting to the MWR gym during normal business hours and are forced to find alternatives.
“We recognize that moving in this direction positively affects Sailors’ quality of life and what better way to support the mission than by enhancing their fitness experience and providing them the means to do it,” Spaddy said.
