Navy Surgeon General recognizes outstanding hospital corpsmen with Danyelle Luckey Sacred Trust Award

31 May 2024

From Chief Mass Communication Specialist John Grandin

The Navy Surgeon General announced the recipients of the Calendar Year (CY) 2023 Danyelle Luckey Sacred Trust Award, May 18.

The Danyelle Luckey Sacred Trust Award was named in honor of Seaman Danyelle Luckey, who served aboard Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) until her tragic death in October 2016.

Her passing served as the catalyst for seminal changes to our afloat and ashore sepsis protocols which significantly improved the delivery of care to our patient. This award honors hospital corpsmen who embody the very best in Navy Medicine. Their unwavering dedication to compassionate care, open communication, and teamwork ensures the highest quality healthcare for our service members and their families.
Rear Adm. Darin Via, the 40th Surgeon General of the Navy

Established in 2022, the award recognizes hospital corpsmen who exemplify the Navy's core values of honor, courage, and commitment by providing exceptional patient-centered care, advocating for patients' needs, and continuously working to improve processes for patient safety and well-being.

The CY23 Danyelle Luckey Sacred Trust Award recipients are Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Grant Ulman, assigned to Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Camp Lejeune in North Carolina; Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Anthony Prescott, assigned to Headquarters, 3rd Battalion, Marine Expeditionary Force (MEF), III Marine Information Group in Okinawa, Japan; Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Sakina Herron, assigned to Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5); and Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Benjamin Shaw, assigned to aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Each awardee will receive a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Navy Medicine – represented by more than 44,000 highly-trained military and civilian health care professionals – provides enduring expeditionary medical support to the warfighter on, below, and above the sea, and ashore.
