NAVAL BASE GUAM (April 9, 2024) – The Charles King Fitness Center (CKFC) will be implementing 24-hour entry fitness in the coming months.
Commander, Navy Installations Command, which oversees all 70 Navy bases around the globe, signed a memorandum on March 8 authorizing installation commanding officers to move forward with implementing 24-hour entry to fitness facilities.
According to Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Guam (MWR) Director Donna Spaddy, the center is working on installing electronic surveillance systems for safety and security. The cameras will ensure that the fitness center remains safe when utilizing the facility, which will be unattended after hours. MWR is also working on an unmanned entry system for patrons to check-in.
“As mandated by the CNIC, we must be in compliance and have 24/7 access by the end of September,” Spaddy said. “However, we are working diligently to meet those requirements if we can, sooner than that.”
Once an opening date for 24-hour access is finalized, information will be made available via NBG and MWR’s respective Facebook pages.
Approximately 833 patrons use the CKFC daily. Military personnel stand duty at varying hours of the day, including night shifts, depending on their roles and responsibilities. As a result, service members often have difficulty getting to the MWR gym during normal business hours and are forced to find alternatives.
For the safety of patrons, several restrictions will be implemented while fitness centers are unstaffed. These include:
- Unsupervised patrons must be 18 years or older
- Patrons younger than 18 must be supervised by a parent or legal guardian
- Guests are not permitted access
- Access to saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, and aquatic spaces are not permitted.
