NAVAL BASE GUAM (Oct. 20, 2023) - The Big Screen Theater is actively undergoing a $1.3 million repair following significant damage from Typhoon Mawar. During a tour of the construction site on Oct. 18, construction workers could be seen moving and re-installing wooden acoustic panels along the walls.
"They are about 40 percent complete with the work," said NBG Public Works Officer Cmdr. Nicholas Leinweber.
The Big Screen Theater sustained substantial water damage during Tyhoon Mawar, which swept through the island on May 23. Prior to Typhoon Mawar the theater was closed due to issues with the projection system, which have since been resolved. However, the combination of water damage and the island wide loss of power for an extended period of time, caused even greater damage and further delayed the theater's reopening.
The latest repairs also include carpet replacement, reupholstered seating, envelope repairs, and HVAC restoration.
"The building envelope consists of building materials that separate the indoors from the outdoors," Leinweber said. "Each part of the envelope is vital to the structural integrity of the building while facilitating climate control. For the most part, the building envelope consists of the exterior walls, foundations, roof, windows and doors."
The repairs are expected to be completed by the end of November 2023.
