In honor of Veterans Day, the Amphibious Transport Dock ship USS New York (LPD 21) will participate in New York City’s (NYC) annual Veterans Day celebrations, Nov. 8-12.
Sailors and Marines on USS New York will participate in a variety of events in and around the city to honor the service and sacrifice of the nation’s veterans. Events include the annual NYC Veterans Day Parade, a wreath laying ceremony, volunteering at the NY State Veterans Home in Queens, and participation in other community relations events.
“We are absolutely honored to return to our namesake city and look forward to engaging with the local community during our visit,” said Capt. Benjamin Oakes, commanding officer of USS New York. “It’s especially meaningful to be in our city during Veterans Week where we have the opportunity to thank our nation’s veterans for their service and sacrifice.”
USS New York, whose motto is “Strength Forged through Sacrifice, Never Forget” is one of three amphibious transport dock ships named in honor of the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The ship's bow stem was cast using 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center. The Navy named the eighth and ninth ships of the class USS Arlington and USS Somerset in honor of the victims of the attacks on the Pentagon and United Flight 93.
USS New York is scheduled to arrive at Pier 88 in Manhattan at approximately noon, Wednesday, Nov. 8. The ship will be open for public visitation Sunday, Nov. 12 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
