CNATT's top Sailor reflects on award, career

13 March 2023

From Jerron K. Barnett

Congratulations to Naval Air Technical Training Center’s (NATTC) Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Brittany McClain, who was selected as Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training’s (CNATT) 2022 Sailor of the Year.
Congratulations to Naval Air Technical Training Center’s (NATTC) Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Brittany McClain, who was selected as Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training’s (CNATT) 2022 Sailor of the Year.

The Chicago, Illinois native is enjoying the fruits of her labor, as she will now compete for Sailor of the Year at Naval Education and Training Command.

“When the CO {CNATT Commanding Officer Capt. Vence Logan} announced my name as the winner, I was honestly in shock,” McClain said. “I was amongst a very competitive group of individuals. I was relieved because I could finally take a breather and rest assured that my hard work has finally paid off.”

McClain was initially assigned as a Carrier Air Traffic Control “C” School instructor at NATTC, and she also held the role as leading petty officer and course supervisor for the Air Operations Officer course. Now she works as NATTC’s pay and personnel administrator.  In that role she processes retirements, separations and transfers.

She’s pursuing higher career aspirations though, as she hopes to be selected for chief petty officer, and ultimately be selected for Navy Officer Candidate School.  McClain has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and a Master of Business in Human Resource Management from Columbia College of Missouri.

“I am a pretty ambitious person and I believe that the sky is the limit,” McClain said. “I will not limit my success by only selecting one path. I know that I will thrive no matter what route I take. I intend to enjoy this journey and continue on until it’s no longer fun for me.”

While in Pensacola at the end of February, the 2022 CNATT Sailor of the Year finalists toured CNATT headquarters and the National Naval Aviation Museum.

Job well done to all this year’s nominees from across the domain and the CNATT Chiefs’ Mess for a fabulous recognition week:

Cryptologic Technician Interpretive 1st Class Glen Ford, CNATT Unit Whidbey Island
