AGANA HEIGHTS, Guam (March 3, 2023) – Guam High School (GHS) donated 227 Interactive Flat Panels (IFPs) to George Washington High School (GWHS) during a ceremony at the GHS campus, March 2.
IFPs are collaboration tools designed for interactive white boarding, videoconferencing, screen sharing, and more. The latest technologies allow students and teachers to connect securely whether they're in the same room or joining remotely.
GHS officials credited the initiation of the donation process to GHS alumni Ryleen Castro, who was present for the IFP presentation via video call.
“Ryleen Castro is a class of 2022 graduate, who did a Global Studies Civic action project her senior year and she wanted to change the policy of turning in good condition equipment,” said Guam High School Principal Katrina Watts. “Ms. Castro conducted research showing how Guam Department of Education schools could benefit from Guam High School’s gently used equipment. Basically it’s about a partnership; we partner in athletics, we partner in ROTC, but we want to partner in education as well.”
Research led Castro, and Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) officials to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Disposition Service’s Computers for Learning (CFL) Program, which allows information technology (IT) equipment to be donated to schools that have applied and have been approved for the program.
GWHS Principal Dexter Fullo said they are extremely grateful to have registered for the DLA CFL program.
“With approval and acquisition of equipment through the program, we will be better able to maximize teaching and learning at our George Washington High (School) classrooms,” Fullo said. “We are partners in the lives and learning of our students - all of us. Whether it’s here at DoDEA schools, in private, or in other public schools, our students and ultimately the island of Guam will feel the ripple effects of opportunities and partnerships such as this.”
The 227 IFPs are all fully operational and have been returned to factory settings.
GHS in Agana Heights, is a DoDEA school and serves nearly 500 students grades nine through 12. GWHS in Mangilao, is a Guam Department of Education school and serves more than 1,450 students grades nine through 12.
