Fourth Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment Decommissions After 17 Years of Service

Fourth Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment (NELR) held the command’s decommissioning ceremony at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, Jan. 20, 2023.

Attendees of the ceremony included Rear Adm. Dennis Collins, Commander, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group; Capt. Andrew Duessel, Commodore, Fourth Navy Expeditionary Logistics Regiment; and Sailors formerly and currently assigned to 4th NELR, as the group recognized the regiment’s 17 years of service to the fleet.

“As we sundown at the 4th Logistics Regiment, I want to commend all of our 4th regiment warriors for exceeding my commander’s guidance,” said Collins. “To the 4th NELR team, thank you for answering every call, meeting every mission, and leaving a legacy of performance that is going to inspire future cargo handlers.”

In 2008, Commander, Naval Expeditionary Logistics Support Group commissioned one of their founding components, which laid the keel for 4th NELR to provide command and control coordination and oversight for Navy Cargo Handling Battalions 11, 12, and 13.

“My time at the command was pretty short, but I met a lot of great leaders during my time here,” said Logistics Specialist 1st Class Randy Lee, leading petty officer of the supply department at 4th NELR. “4th NELR is a small command, but everyone here is going to have a big impact at whatever organizations they go to next.”

Since its commissioning, 4th NELR provided many capabilities, including conducting maritime preposition force and joint logistics over-the-shore operations and supporting logistics operations for foreign humanitarian assistance and civil support across the world.

“The decommissioning of 4th NELR, although tough for our Sailors, is a necessary part of the continuing evolution of the organization,” said Duessel. “As our landscapes change and our challenges evolve, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group must change and evolve with the times to ensure that our forces are ready to fight the next fight, not the last fight.”

4th NELR was homeported at Marine Corps Facility Blount Island in Jacksonville, Florida.
