Adm. Samuel Paparo, commander U.S. Pacific Fleet, traveled to Thailand, Aug. 17-19, 2022, to discuss the increasing security challenge in the Indo-Pacific and the importance of close coordination and integration between the two navies.

Paparo met with several senior Thai officials including:

  • Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Defence Gen. Worakiat Rattananont
  • Commander-in-Chief, Royal Thai Navy Adm. Somprasong Nilsamai
  • Commander-in-Chief, Royal Thai Fleet Adm. Suwin Jangyodsuk
  • Commandant, Royal Thai Marine Corps Vice Adm. Ronnarong Sittinan
  • Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, Royal Thai Navy Rear Adm. Supachai Tanasanakon

During the visit, Paparo visited the Royal Thai Navy RQ-21A Squadron 104 and the Naval Special Warfare small boat unit. The U.S. Navy formally handed over the RQ-21A Blackjack unmanned aircraft system to the Royal Thai Navy in May to enhance Thailand’s maritime security capabilities for search and rescue operations, and drug and human trafficking interdiction. The UAS and small boat operations advance interoperability between our navies.

The two navies recently participated together in CARAT Thailand and Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC).

The visit to Thailand underscored United States’ commitment to strengthening alliances and partnerships. The nearly 190 year alliance between the United States and Thailand ensures a free and open Indo-Pacific that is vital to regional peace, security, and stability.
