USS Forrest Sherman Arrives In Aksaz, Turkey For Port Visit

Throughout the past two weeks, Forrest Sherman conducted training evolutions such as electronic warfare, air defense, and photo exercises as well as several replenishments-at-sea with the TCG Kemalreis (F-247), Barbaros-class frigate of the Turkish Navy; the HS Kountouriotis (F462), Kortenaer-class frigate of the Hellenic Navy; the ITS Vulcano, Vulcano-class logistic support ship; Federico Martinengo (F 596), Carlo Bergamini-class frigate of the Italian Navy; and the HS Elli (F450), Kortenaer-class frigate of the Hellenic Navy.

“Throughout this deployment, we have the opportunity to continue to develop our tactical interoperability, fine-tune our communication channels, and push the boundaries of our strengths and capabilities with our NATO allies and partners,” said Cmdr. Lawrence Heyworth IV, commanding officer of USS Forrest Sherman. “It’s extremely apparent that the NATO Alliance is stronger than ever and it’s an honor to serve as the flagship for Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2).”

While in port Aksaz, Sailors will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of tours including sightseeing and shopping in the city of Marmaris, learn the ancient history of Ephesus, enjoy the views at Pamukkale, spend the day rafting in the Dalaman River or enjoy the unique experience of a Turkish bath.
