Commander, Submarine Squadron 19 Conducts Change of Command

SILVERDALE, Wash. - Commander, Submarine Squadron 19 conducted a change of command ceremony at Deterrent Park, Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor, July 13.

Capt. Shawn Huey relieved Capt. Richard Massie and assumed the duties and responsibilities of commodore of COMSUBRON 19.

"The Commodore is the ultimate authority for the oversight, mentoring, assessment, development and certification of our commanding officers and their crews to execute their missions in support of our worldwide combatant commanders," said keynote speaker Rear Adm. Rob Gaucher, Commander, Submarine Group Nine. "Through [Massie's] emphasis on training and Sailor development, he led his COs to complete Sailor qualifications at sea and ashore at significantly improved rates."

Massie assumed command of COMSUBRON 19 October 21, 2019.

"I had the opportunity to work with an incredible staff of individuals, each and every one a consummate professional and expert in their field," said Massie. "I leave [Huey] an impressive team driving forward with momentum. I take great satisfaction in having been part of that team."

Massie's next assignment will be commanding officer of Naval Base Kitsap.

Huey comes to COMSUBRON 19 from the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Michigan (SSGN 727) blue crew.

"I am humbled and honored to be your Commodore,” said Huey. “I am excited to lead you as we work side by side with Group 9, Naval Base Kitsap, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to maximize operational availability, prepare for high end combat, and take care of our crews.”

Originally created as a second squadron for ballistic missile submarines stationed at Bangor, COMSUBRON 19 is responsible for manning, training and equipping two guided-missile submarines, USS Ohio (SSGN 726) and USS Michigan (SSGN 727), and all ballistic-missile and fast attack submarines undergoing maintenance in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
