The observance was in honor of Women’s History Month, which began as a weeklong celebration in 1981. In 1987, in response to a request from the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed legislation designating March as national Women’s History Month.
This year’s theme, “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment,” was brought to life through the powerful testimonies of Kearsarge women who spoke about their own experiences and personal appreciation for the trailblazers who came before them. They iterated the importance of women throughout the Navy’s history, highlighted their personal role models and told anecdotes about the triumph of women in the U.S. Armed Forces.
One of the ceremony’s guest speakers, Senior Chief Information Systems Technician Lauren Boulay, reflected on some of the accomplished women that mentored her and helped to mold her into the leader she is today.
“When I look back at the women that have inspired me, I don’t admire these women because of their gender but because of the way they have mastered their craft,” said Boulay. “They are contributors. They add value to every team they are a part of.”
Boulay finished her remarks with a challenge.
“I challenge everyone to confront bias,” said Boulay. “Encourage diversity as a pillar of strength in the Navy and the rest of America’s Armed Forces.”
Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class Amanda Branch delivered closing remarks for the event in the form of a notable poem by Maya Angelou.
“I am a woman, phenomenally. A phenomenal woman? That’s me.”
