SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Beachmaster Unit One (BMU-1) hosted 10 Lancaster High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) students on April 19.

The seniors will graduate in June and all have a desire to join the military. The unit visits different commands from all branches to explore the capabilities of each, using this time to form a decision on which service they would like to enter.

Adriel Hernandez-Garcia, a JROTC student who is interested in special vehicle maintenance, found the visit particularly informative, as he was able to see BMU-1’s capabilities in executing the mission of sustaining amphibious landing forces and delivering combat power ashore.

“This gives me an idea of what I could potentially be involved in,” said Hernandez-Garcia. “I am able to see how much goes on in a much smaller scale.”

BMU-1 set up a static display of the vehicles used for beach operations to include the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR), and Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo-Vehicle (LARC-V).

The tour included discussion of the capabilities of each vehicle and the importance of proper maintenance in order to execute various BMU-1 missions.

Lancaster High School’s JROTC unit was established in 2001. One of their founding Aerospace Science instructors, retired Senior Master Sergeant David Hood, explained how important it is for students to be exposed to what each branch of the military has to offer.
