NETC Staff Captain’s Cup Golf Tournament Victory

Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) won the Annual Captain’s Cup Golf Tournament onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola March 13.

The team consisted of Charles Bailey, Patrick Sanders, Dennis Mills and Ben Ervin.

“The weather was spectacular and worked out to everyone’s advantage,” said Bailey, an engineer that heads up the Training Readiness Branch at NETC where he has worked for 20 years. “We were lucky enough to hole a few putts, which is always the difference in this format. At our age, we don’t get too nervous and it always feels great to represent NETC at Captain’s Cup golf events.”

Sanders, a Weapon systems program manager, has been at NETC for 16 years and a member of the NETC golf team for 10 years. The team does not formally practice together, but they do their best to play regularly on Saturdays at the A.C. Reed golf course onboard NAS Pensacola.

The tournament consisted of 27 four-man teams that represented commands from both Corry Station and NAS Pensacola. The teams consisted of both active-duty military and Department of the Navy civilians. However, each team was broken down into a two-man scramble. NETC’s Team A consisted of Ervin and Mills who scored a -7 under par 65. Team B consisted of Sanders and Bailey who scored a -4 under par 68.

“The Captain’s Cup is a great event that brings a great crowd together from the various commands,” said Ervin, a member of the Innovation, Research and Development Branch at NETC where he has been since Sept. 2016. ”In general, getting to represent NETC while playing a sport I love is a really rewarding experience.”

Mills also works with the Innovation, Research and Development Branch where he has been for three years. He has previously played in the Captain’s Cup event as a part of the Training Squadron (VT) 86 and Naval Air Technical Training Center teams, but this was his first year representing NETC. When asked if he was nervous about competing, he said, “No, NETC has competed very well, placing in the top three over the past several years in Scramble and Best Ball Formats. It is very competitive every year between NETC, VT-4 and MATSG (Marine Aviation Training Support Group) 21.”

“I personally enjoy doing Captain’s Cup events. It’s a good tool for promoting comradery within our own command and establishing a good rapport with our counterparts in other commands around the area,” said Mills. “Pat Sanders and Charlie Bailey from NETC N4 Division really stepped up their game on Friday and was the deciding factor in bringing home the trophy for NETC this year. I look forward to the Best Ball Golf Competition in November.”
