Southwest Regional Maintenance Center Completes On-Time Delivery of USS Anchorage

16 November 2020

From SWRMC Public Affairs

Southwest Regional Maintenance Center on Oct. 16 successfully delivered USS Anchorage (LPD 23) on time from its maintenance availability.

SAN DIEGO - Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) successfully delivered USS Anchorage (LPD 23) from her availability on-time Oct. 16.

“SWRMC worked with BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair to find cost-effective and innovative solutions during the availability to support on-time delivery of the ship,” said Capt. David Hart, commanding officer, SWRMC. “By staying focused on the goal, the team was able to accomplish the required work to return Anchorage to the fleet, ready to support the Navy’s mission.”

During the availability, SWRMC teams collaborated with contractors from BAE, Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, and the ship’s force to conduct a variety of scheduled overhauls.

The work completed during the availability consisted of removing and rebuilding the entire combat systems suite, the complete overhaul of the rescue boat handling and towing boom, and several air conditioning units. The teams also made repairs to the knuckle boom crane, main propulsion diesel engines, service diesel generators, and deck machinery. Additionally, over 20 electronic alterations and modifications were made throughout the ship to include inspection and repair to over 85 tanks and voids.

The two major factors to Anchorage’s early completion were teamwork and a positive attitude, according to SWRMC Anchorage Project Manager Andre Ross.

“Understanding our roles and responsibilities and how they correlate with the other team member’s roles and responsibilities,” said Ross. “Each person on the maintenance team contributed significantly with their ability to effectively communicate discrepancies found under their cognizance, discuss and develop mitigation plans, and execute those plans. I am very proud of this team and their ability to overcome challenges to deliver on time.”

This availability was another example of SWRMC teaming to deliver an asset to the fleet to perform and complete required training and operational tasking.

SWRMC is meeting its mission to provide superior ship maintenance, modernization, technical support, and training for the Pacific Fleet.
