The Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Logistics Support Center (LSC) went above and beyond supporting the Mayport-based USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) during a two-week stay at Naval Station Norfolk that ended Sept 14.
According to Logistics Support Officer Lt. Cmdr. Chris Sands, nearly the entire crew of The Sullivans remained onboard the ship due to COVID-19 restrictions, relying solely on Logistics Specialist First Class Anthony Trinidad, a logistics support representative (LSR) in the LSC for all matters of logistics.
”It’s as if I was their lifeline here in port so it made the services we provided that much more important,” said Trinidad.
Sands explained the preparations began before the ship’s arrival. Trinidad examined their logistics requirements and ensured that all freight for the ship was ready for immediate delivery and their orders from SERVMART were waiting on them as well. He also worked with the Advanced Traceability and Control facility on Naval Station Norfolk to expedite the disposition of depot level repairable items.
“He was truly their shore-based surrogate ensuring a constant flow of material and provisions, to include acting on their behalf for all high priority CASREP (casualty report) requirements that needed to be brought to the ship to repair casualties,” explained Sands.
Sands added that each LSR has a number of ships they are individually responsible for. Describing Trinidad as a top performer, Sands said that during this port visit he had to balance the needs of The Sullivans with the other ships he is responsible for, both in port and underway.
“With The Sullivans visit the fleet threw him a curve ball and he knocked it out of the park,” Sand concluded. I am extremely pleased with his performance on a daily basis, this time his efforts truly impressed me.”
