MAYPORT (Aug. 8, 2020) - The Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy, Installations & Environment) Charles Williams visited Naval Station Mayport for the Navy’s USS St. Louis Commissioning Ceremony, Aug. 8.

The Navy commissioned the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS St. Louis (LCS 19) at a private event due to public health concerns regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Williams was honored to speak at the Ceremony. It was particularly a privilege for Williams to partake in the commissioning of the LCS 19 as it bears his hometown’s namesake. “From Marinette, Wisconsin to Jacksonville, Florida, and beyond, the USS St. Louis is a multi-mission combatant ready to represent the city of St. Louis throughout its operational life and legacy,” Williams said.

“LCS 19 will be able to leverage the unique and advanced capabilities of the Freedom-class littoral combat ships, including cyber upgrades, flight decks that support integrated helicopter launches and their ability to dispatch and reclaim boats for special forces operations. She will boldly go forth to complete her primary mission of countering submarines, surface ships and mines on the high seas and the littorals to protect the United States. She will be efficient, agile, and capable of handling whatever comes her way.”

As the seventh ship to hail USS St. Louis, Williams charged the crew to make their own history, but to never forget the significance of those who have gone before them and the legacy they will undoubtedly continue.

Williams also expressed the Navy’s deep appreciation for Barbara and Andy Taylor, LCS 19’s sponsors, who went above and beyond to be actively involved in every step of LCS 19’s journey. “Much of what they do is anonymous but believe me when I say they are the preeminent philanthropic family of the St. Louis community and a donor to Navy causes. Thank you.”

Williams completed his remarks by emphasizing his thanks for the Taylor family and everyone who made the private, live streamed event possible. Williams looks forward to hearing about the great adventures and accomplishments of LCS 19.
