The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57) departed Piraeus, Greece, after a scheduled port visit April 16, 2019.
Mitscher's visit to Piraeus strengthened the U.S.-Greece partnership, fostered enduring relationships and emphasized the U.S. Navy’s shared commitment to promoting security and stability within the region.
"Mitscher’s crew had an incredible time in Piraeus and Athens,” said Cmdr. Ian Scaliatine, commanding officer of Mitscher. “It was a wonderful opportunity to experience Greek culture and history, and to learn so much about the people of Greece.”
Sailors aboard Mitscher toured many ancient sites including the Acropolis of Athens, the Parthenon, the Temple of Poseidon, and Delphi.
Mitscher’s port visit to Greece demonstrates the shared commitment to promoting safety and stability in the region, while seeking opportunities to enhance interoperability with our allies.
Mitscher, homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.
U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
