The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57) arrived in Haifa, Israel, April 8, 2019, for a scheduled port visit to enhance U.S.-Israel relations as the two partners work together for a stable, secure, and prosperous region.

“The people of Israel have been overwhelmingly kind to us,” said Cmdr. Ian Scaliatine, commanding officer of Mitscher. “The crew is really looking forward to this port visit, the sights they will see, and the relationships we’ll build. We are very excited to be here in this beautiful city of Haifa and experience the rich history of Israel.”

The ship’s visit to Haifa is a demonstration of our continued commitment to the collective security of the region, and an opportunity to build and advance relationships between the U.S. Navy and the people of Israel.

“Mitscher’s crew hopes to explore the full range of all that Haifa and Israel have to offer,” said Cmdr. Matt Cox, executive officer of Mitscher. “This is a port visit that our team has been hoping for and looking forward to for quite some time.”

Mitscher, homeported at Naval Station Norfolk, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
