Commander Lawrence Schaffer, a native of Philadelphia, PA, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1991, and completed recruit training in Great Lakes, IL. Upon completion of basic training, he attended Aviation Ordnanceman “A” School at Naval Aviation Technical Training Center (NATTC) Millington, TN. He is a graduate of Excelsior University with a degree in Criminal Justice (Forensic Science) and earned his commission through the Limited Duty Officer Program.
His enlisted assignments include USS GEORGE WASHIGNTON (CVN 73) where he qualified as 3M/DC Work Center Supervisor and EE Forklift Supervisor, NAS Norfolk Weapons Department as Truck Inspection and Hazardous Material Certification LPO, USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of 9/11 Operations ENDURING FREEDOM/IRAQI FREEDOM, and the Center for Naval Leadership Detachment Washington D.C. LCPO, qualifying as a Master Training Specialist and Lead Curriculum Supervisor.
His officer assignments include the SUNLINERS of VFA-81 as Squadron Gunner, NAVAIR 6.7 Air/Ship Weapons Integration/PEO Carriers Weapons Officer and onboard the USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77) as Weapons Assembly Officer. He served as Commander, Naval Air Forces Atlantic Carrier Readiness Training Team and Weapons Safety Assistance Team Leader, Ordnance Handling Officer and Weapons Department Principal Assistant onboard USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74) and served as NAVAIR’s PMA-201 Deputy Product Support Manager and Aviation Armament Equipment Assistant Program Manager for Logistics. His most recent assignment was Weapons Officer aboard USS GEORGE H. W. BUSH (CVN 77).
His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit, Battle “E”, Good Conduct, National Defense, Armed Forces Expeditionary, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
