Born in Seoul, Korea, Captain Harold (Hal) Kim is an NCAA All American and Bachelor of Science (Economics, 1997) graduate from the United States Naval Academy. His initial assignment was aboard USS Cleveland (LPD 7), where he was designated a Surface Warfare Officer and served as the First Division Officer. During this tour, he participated in RIMPAC 98, Operation Alaskan Roads, Operation Southern Watch, and WESTPAC. Following this tour, he served as a Fire Control Officer aboard USS Porter (DDG 78) on her maiden deployment to 6th Fleet. Upon completion, CAPT Kim transferred to Assault Craft Unit TWO as the Operations Officer.
He held a variety of assignments in the Navy Reserve, including serving as OIC of Beachmaster Unit TWO Det 206, CO of Cargo Afloat Readiness Team TWO, CO of Expeditionary Port Unit 107, CO of NR Commander Navy Region Japan, CO of NR CNFK, and CO of CPF N3/N5. His non-command assignments include Deputy Commander Joint Task Force Port Openings, Executive Officer of NR CSG FOUR FST-E, BMD Planner with the C2F AADC Unit; Theater Air Missile Defense planner/operator with C2F JFMCC; Senior Air Defense Officer with C2F JFACC; Crises Action Planning and Partnership for HQ EUCOM; and as an analyst for OPNAV N81 and N84 (S&T). He was recalled to active duty from 2009 to 2010. He served as Executive Officer for Navy Detainee Battalion FOUR, composed of 420 Sailors during Operation Iraqi Freedom at Camp Taji, Iraq.
He earned a Master’s in Business Administration at R.H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland (College Park) in 2007 with a dual concentration in Finance and Supply Chain, a degree in National Security Studies from the Naval War College, and is a graduate of Naval Command and Staff College. He also earned AJPME certification from the Joint Forces Staff College.
